Company Garden District New West
New West has an enterpreneurial character. There are many starting companies, but the opportunities for established companies to expand in the neighbourhood are very limited. In the middle of this green urban environment YD+I wants to develop a company garden district; new housing possibilities for expanding entrepreneurs who are spatially, socially or economically deeply rooted in the area and who can contribute to the social climate of the neighbourhood. What implications does a garden of companies have for the work itself , its relationship with living conditions and what will it look like eventually?
Activity plays an important role in the development of the Amsterdam New West area. There are approximately 7000 companies divided over 4 districts in the city. These companies create employment and prospects for youth and contribute to the social climate of the area. In the next years, a very large group of youngsters, who see business as a means of shaping their own future, will enter the labour market.
The lack of good housing opportunities for companies in New West is currently the biggest obstacle in attracting new businesses and succesful starting entrepreneurs who want to develop their companies. Often it’s not possible to expand on the location itself and moving to a business center outside the city is unattractive. Furthermore, many starting entrepreneurs lack the knowledge needed to succesfully expand a business. The city wants to prevent companies from leaving the area. At the same time, they want to improve the social climate of the area. How can a succesful combination of work and living be established?
In the Western Garden Cities a large part of the buildings are being demolished to make way for new building sites. In the middle of this green living area YD+I wants to develop a green Company Garden District. The New West Company Garden District has the ambition to become an inspiring environment where starting and growing entrepreneurs will get the chance to evolve. This will also benefit the neighbourhood and the residents.
What does a garden of companies mean for the ways of working? What is the relationship between the Company Garden District and the living climate ? What can this garden look like? YD+I wants to confront and challenge creative minds with these questions in order to come up with innovative solutions which are ambitious yet compatible with the reality of the Amsterdam New West area.
