Project

Program for the Olympic District

YD+I ,together with the council of the Southern district of the city of Amsterdam, is developing a program for the newly established Stadion square in the city of Amsterdam. The program’s main theme is Sports. We are very ambitious about this project. The new program is expected to not only reinvigorate the square, but it is also expected to revive the whole Stadion area culturally, economically, and socially. We will explore the possibility of transforming the Stadion square into the main sports plaza of Amsterdam and Amsterdam the primary City of Sports in the Netherlands.

The stadion square is a historical place. It was built for the 1928 Olympic games, which were held in Amsterdam. A lot has changed in the past 80 years. Not only its appearance has changed, but also its use. The scheduled re-development is expected to last five to ten years. During this period the area will not only be transformed externally ( the look of the area), but it will also acquire new meaning and new zest.

At least, this is the goal of the ‘ Software Stadion area’ project. The project aims to bring together all involved parties from around the area and design the future purpose and meaning of the Stadion square. In order to do this we need tangible proposals and ideas.
These have finally been made thanks to a thorough work preparation. We’ve developed a program for the next 5 years. A professional organisation has been established to implement this, the Olympic Organisation.

During the creative proces, we’ve developed the program leaflet. This was done in the following stages;
Teams were formed consisting of future members of the corporation and several creative professionals from various disciplines. Together they worked on a series of executable proposals for events. They based their ideas on 5 sub themes (all related to the overall theme of Sports) that were seelcted by YD+I. The results of the plans have now been compiled in the program leaflet, which is also the final publication of this project.

The first series of activities have already been scheduled. We realize that this comes at a time when the square itself is still in the proces of being built, but why should you wait for the square to be finished?
